“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
The seven days of the week. Sometimes they are filled with joy and happiness; sometimes, they are sad and lonely; sometimes, they are long and boring.
However, we should always remember that our days can be dedicated to someone special: God. In fact, the Church has assigned a special meaning to each day of the week! Do you know them all? Let’s take a look!
Sunday
Sundays are dedicated to the Blessed Trinity. And what better dedication than the day we attend Mass?
We give adoration, thanksgiving, and honor to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit on these days by fulfilling our Sunday obligation and going to Mass, abstaining from servile work, and by taking time to enjoy family and friends on this day.
Monday
Mondays are dedicated to the Angels. We need our Angel terribly on Mondays, don’t we? Mondays are often hard.
We have to start the week again, begin our school – and the weekend was so fun! But, we can turn our day and grumpy mood around by saying a quick prayer to our Guardian Angel! “Angel of God, my guardian dear…”
Tuesday
Tuesdays are dedicated to the Apostles. Our Apostolic Church was founded on the teachings of the Apostles. Jesus gave St. Peter the keys to His kingdom! Each bishop is a successor to one of the Apostles.
Wednesday
Wednesdays are dedicated to St. Joseph. Good and holy St. Joseph! He is the foster father of Jesus and protector of Mary and her purity. We should pray to him and ask him to help us accept God’s will as he did.
“Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all my interests and desires…”
Thursday
Thursdays are dedicated to the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is the greatest gift of God to mankind, and He instituted it on Holy Thursday. Thus, we remember this beautiful and sacred sacrament every Thursday.
What a precious gift – that we can receive Jesus Himself in this sacrament every time we receive Communion!
“Be mindful, O Lord, of Thy creature, whom Thou hath redeemed by Thy most precious blood.”
Friday
Fridays are dedicated to the Passion of Christ. Fridays are ordained by the Church to be days of sacrifice and penance. Although the Church does not require us to abstain from meat any longer (although that still holds during Lent) on Fridays, the Church still asks that we do some sort of penance.
Fridays are the perfect opportunity to put ourselves aside and practice our charity by doing good works for others.
Saturday
Saturdays are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturdays was first “officially” promoted by Saint Alcuin – the Benedictine monk who was “Minister of Education” for the court of Charlemagne.
Since Sunday is the Lord’s Day, it seems appropriate to dedicate the preceding day to His Mother.
I hope you have enjoyed learning about the special feasts and meanings to the days of the week! It is always a wonderful practice to have God in the forefront of our minds. God bless, everyone!
